Robert Lees, died 11 Feb 1776.

12. Richard Rose

CHRISTENING:

MARRIAGE:
1. Elizabeth Crittenden, 21 Apr 1765, Chatham; Parish Register, Chatham,
Kent, England, p.68, FHL film 1473651; says she's from Chatham, and
she from Gillingham.

DEATH:
1. After 1798; cf. wife's burial record.
2. Note that a Samuel Rose was buried at Chatham 13 Oct 1812, twelve days
before a Richard. The Chatham Land Tax Rolls show a Richard Rose being
replaced by a Samuel Rose in 1799, which corresponds to this Richard's wife's
burial. Parhaps Samuel moved in to take care of him, and the shock of Samuel's
death contributed to his own. Of course it could also be a different Richard,
possibly even Samuel's son, though that Richard matches an 1824 marriage. Note
that the Roses disappear altogether from the Chatham Land Tax Rolls in 1813.
FHL film 1469812-3.

13. Elizabeth Crittenden

CHRISTENING:
1. Parish Register, Chatham, Kent, England, FHL film 1473646.

SEALING TO SPOUSE:

14. Joseph Bulfill

BIRTH:
1. Joseph BULLFILL, of Chatham; from Elizabeth BULLFILL christening,
Parish Register, Chatham, Kent, England, FHL film 1473646.
2. Joseph BULFILL, of Chatham; from marriage; (note clerk spells his name
BULLFILL, but he signs it BULFILL; banns say BULFILL).
3. Joseph BULFILL, of Chatham; from James Fullagar Will (see below).

PARENTS:
1. I found only two families of Bulfills in the Chatham Parish between
1700-1800. One belongs to this Joseph, and the other to the Joseph I've put as
his father. The older Joseph is the correct age and had children at the
correct times to be this Joseph's father. Chatham, Kent, Parish Registers, FHL
film 1473646.
2. The earlier Chatham Joseph, with his wife Ann, apparently also had children
christened at St. Nicholas Rochester. Their child Joseph, corresponding to
this Joseph, was christened at St. Nicholas. For Rochester Bulfills, see IGI.
3. A Joseph Bullfield married Ann Fullagar in Aylesford, corresponding to the
elder Chatham Joseph. He came from Rochester, shee from Leeds. Aylesford,
Kent, Parish Registers, FHL film 1473688.
4. The James Fullagar Will leaves rents and clothes to his sister Ann Bulfill
and his "brother" (=brother-in-law) Joseph Bulfill, and a watch and the rents
if Ann dies to his "cousin" (=nephew) Joseph Bulfill, son of Joseph Bulfill of
Chatham. This Joseph matches the nephew in Chatham. Cantebury Wills, vol. 95
folio 164, FHL film 0188995.
5. A Joseph Bulfill witnessed this Joseph's marriage to Elizabeth Basterfield.
His signature matches that of the Joseph who married Jane Wood and later Eleanor
Meredith. This suggests a close relationship to that Joseph. Chatham, Kent,
Parish Register, 18 May 1769, p.140, FHL film 1473651; Gillingham Parish
Register, 11 Oct 1759, p.30, FHL film 1042491; and 4 Oct 1788, p.192, FHL film
1042492.
6. Ann Bulfill, wife of Joseph, died in Gillingham. The Jane Wood and
Eleanor Meredith marriages took place in Gillingham afterwards. Joseph
and Ann's daughter Frances was buried in Gillingham, all of which places the
witness Joseph there. See FGS's.
7. A Joseph Bulfill Jun. appears as a landlord on the Gillingham Land Tax rolls
until 1788. A Joseph Bulfill Sen., formerly a tenant next door, takes his
place as landlord in 1790, then disappears in 1795. So Joseph Bulfill Sen.
seems to have inherited from Joseph Bulfill Jun. FHL film 1470094.
8. The age at death, from the Gillingham Parish Register, puts Joseph Bulfill
Jun.'s birth in 1719. In fact, a Joseph Bulfill, son of Joseph Bulfill and Ann
Smith, was christened in Rochester that year (matching the elder Chatham
Joseph, cf. Bullfield/Fullagar marriage). Gillingham, Kent, Parish Register,
p.62, FHL film 1042490 item 4.
9. The age at death, from the Gillingham Parish Register, puts Joseph Bulfill
Sen.'s birth in 1746. This matches the 1746 christening of Joseph Bulfill,
(apparently this Joseph), son of Joseph and Ann Bulfill, at St. Nicholas,
referred to above. Ditto p.130.
10. The Gillingham Joseph Bulfill Jun. was both the son of a Joseph, then, and
father of a Joseph Sen. In fact, the Gillingham parish records give
evidence Joseph Sen. (corresponding to this Joseph) was the father of two
Josephs. Joseph, illegitimate son of Joseph Bulfill and Mary Langley, was
buried in 1780, and another Joseph, also illegitimate, same parents, was
christened in 1782. Gillingham, Kent Parish Register, p.123, FHL film 1042490
item 3; ditto, p.11, item 4.
11. Gillingham also records the birth in 1788 of Job William, illegitimate son
of Betty "wife of Joseph Bulfill. The father has left her and the present child
is the spurious issue of some other person but of whom the mother declares she
cannot tell.") She would correspond, then, to Elizabeth Basterfield. Ditto,
p.113, item 3.

CHRISTENING.
1. 30 Mar 1746, St. Nicholas, Rochester; IGI.

MARRIAGE:
1. Elizabeth BASTERFIELD, 18 May 1769; Parish Register, Chatham, Kent,
England, p.140, FHL film 1473651; cf. banns, same film, and BT, same spelling
of wife's name.
2. Mary LANGLEY--THEY WERE NOT MARRIED.

BURIAL:
1. 28 Sep 1795, Gillingham; Parish Register, Gillingham, Kent, England, p.130,
FHL film 1042490; (age 49).

BAPTISM:
1. IGI.

ENDOWMENT:
1. IGI.

SEALING TO PARENTS:
1. IGI.

SEALING TO SPOUSE:

2. Mary LANGLEY;

15. Elizabeth Basterfield

BIRTH:
1. Betty Bulfill, 1749; burial record.
2. Elizabeth Bullfill, of Chatham; from Elizabeth BULLFILL (her daughter)
christening, Parish Register, Chatham, Kent, England, FHL film 1473646.
3. Elizabeth BASTERFIELD, of Gillingham; from marriage.

MARRIAGE:
1. Joseph BULFILL, 18 May 1769; Parish Register, Chatham, Kent, England,
p.140, FHL film 1473651; cf. banns, same film, and BT, same spelling on her
name.
2. UNKNOWN; Gillingham; Parish Register, Gillingham, Kent, England, p.42,
FHL film 1042490 item 4; ("Son of Betty, Wife of Joseph Bulfill (The Husband
has left her & the present child is the spurious issue of some other Person
but of whom the Mother declares she cannot tell").

BURIAL:
1. 1 Oct 1800, Gillingham; Parish Register, Gillingham, Kent, England, p.224,
FHL film 1042490, (age 51).
