Journal of Samuel Rose Parkinson, I was Born in Barrowford Lancaster England April 12th 1831; my Father William Parkinson died when I was 6 months old; then my Mother moved to Stockport Lancaster, and tought Chool for A liveing; in the year 1835 my Mother got Married to Edmond Berry; he was A Coal Merchant; in the year 1839 my Father and Family emigrated to new Austrillia; we Set Sail on Friday, and Call in at St. Jago to get fresh water, but they would not let us have any; except we Stay there 8 days; but the Captain would not, So he hoisted the Anchor and Set Sail on Friday; we Sail to Cape of good hope, there we

Cast Anchor on Friday; we took in Fresh water, and cattle, Some Cape sheep, the tails of these are About 2 ft. long; and 1 ft. wide, across the medle, we took quite A lot of polterry; and Set Sail on Friday: we landed in Sidney Town on Friday; we was Six month on the way; in the year 1840 my Father was A lime Merchant in Sidney Town and done well; my Mother, and me Started A grocerry Store and made money; in the Spring of 1843 my Father Started A Brick yard; he lost About all we had made; So he got discourage and emigrated to new Zealand; he did not like new Zealand; So he paid his fair on the Same Ship to Valparaso;

South America, my Father got A good berth on the English water works; he was put in bos over the hole affair; I went to School 6 months; in the year 1844, I was interpretor of the Spanish Language, for A Dentist; in the year 1845, I tended Store for A Iron Merchant; In 1846 Father emigrated to England we had A ruff time Sailing round Cape horn; the sea Brok our bulworks in fore and aft; we was Sailing one evening with A stiff Brize, and the sea froze over; and it was all the Captain Could do, to turn the ship around. and Sailed back all Night, when we Came up Again, the ice had turn into iceburgs, they had to stear through very carful; when we left

South America; our Captain bet A new hat, with another Captain; that he would be in England first, when we got round the Cape horn, the Captain Saw A Ship behind he thought it A Pirate Ship So he heave to, and this Captain Sail right Along Side of us, and had A long talk with our Captain; and then Sail off and told our Captain to remember the new hat; we Sail in A heavy gail every day; untill we Came to the Coast of Irland; and there we got Ship rack; but we got ashore Safe, and travel over land to A Seaport town; name Wexford, we took pasage to Liverpool;

we took the train to Stockport Lancashire; there was no work to be got in the Country; So Father bought 2 Cows, and I went around Selling milk; in the year 1847, Father moved to Blackburn; Father and me went to work, on the Blackburn and Presston Rail Road; then we moved to Ratendale, and Bacup Rail Road, work there all Summer; and moved Back to Blackburn, and work on the Blackburn and accrenton Rail Road all winter; erly in the Spring, Mother took me to See my relations; I see 1 aunt She lived at the

foot of Pendle hill; we Cross over to downnom side; there I Saw An Huncle, with A large Family, bid them good by pass thru Downnom; this uncle last named got his liveing by Farming; I Saw another uncle beween Bernley and Barrowford; he howned A Cotton Factory, he gave me A half A Crown I thought small Potatoes. In the year 1848 we emigrated to St Louis Mo. there Father and me work in A Porkhouse all winter and; I Joine the Church we Saved money to Send for my Sister Elizebeth; and her husband and Family;

in the Spring Father and me, got A Job at A Flower mill; driveing team at $1.00 A day each; July 18th 1849, my Mother died of Colerry; the next winter Father got Married; in the Spring 1850 I left home; as I and my Stept Mother and me Could not agree, about the Children; I went to Board with Bro Clemings and I was out of work 2 or 3 weeks I got afread I Could not pay my board bill but I got A Job to drive team at $18.00 Board and washing per month I work 3½ months I Saved $32.50

then I quit working by the month and Bought me A horse and dray for $130.00 I paid 30 dollars down and got time for the balance and I paid the balance in Six weeks during this time Father had move up the river to Lagrans Mo. and I had got home Sick so I went up to see them I found they was all in helth but poor in Circumstances so I told my Father how I was geting along he Could not hardly belive it but I told him if he would Come down to St. Louis I would give him my team and A good mill to hall for where he Could make from $15.00 to $25.00 per week So he took me

up and moved to St. Louis, and I Bought Another team on time, I paid 230.00 dollars for it; in the winter Father got discourage becouse there was no work he wanted me to take the team back as he did not like to Sell it becouse I had maid him A Present of it; he said he had no feed for his team nor his Family; So I told him to go home and Cheere up; and I would bring him Some, So I Borrow Some money, and Bought him 2 Barrills of Flower, 1 hog, and 1 load of hay, and 1 load of Corn, and I took it to him, and I told him when he got any more money;

to keep it; and let his wife have A little at A time; I finish paying for my team in the Spring of 1851; I work very hard and, Some times I work every other Night, in the year 1852 I let my Father have A horse worth $75.00; for $40.00, then my Brother in low William Higgins; wanted me to give him A start in the world; so I Sald him A team for $175.00; and he was to pay me as much as he Could every week; he had the team 1 year and pay me $5.00; his excuse was that he Could not do all kinds of work; So I lent him A mule So that he could do

all kinds of work; and pay me for the team I had let him have; but he tried to Swindle me out of the whole affair; So I put it into A lawyer hands; and he got 1 mule back, he Could not get any more becouse the law aloud him all he had left; in January 1th 1852 I got Married I had about $600.00 in the Bank I started another team and made money all the time; February 23th 1853 my Son Samuel was Born; in this year my sister Lucy, and her Stept Mother Could not Agree; So She Come to me, and I protected her, in the year 1854 I emigrated to Utah Teritory; I brought my Sister

with me; I Cross the planes with A four mule team; I found Utah A hard place for me to live and Save my team; untill I got use to the ways of the Cuntry; I turn my team out on the Range for the winter; I went to work for A. Alder and Shem pernell, Burning Charcoal, in them seders west of Ogden City; and hauled it to Kayvill; and me and Bro Robins got our winter wood of willows roots; down by the lake of kay vill; in the Fall I bought A Bilden lot, and A set of house logs, So I went to work and Bilt me A log house; and moved in About the last of December 1854; in the Spring I

I bought me A pease of land, and put in A crop, and the grassoppers eat it all up; So I went to work on the fort wall in 1855 [inserted: “my wife had twins William and Charlotte”]; in the fall I Contracked to run A threshing Machine; as there was A little grain raise up North; So I made my bread and Seed, for another year; I traided my Stove for another, and got A Cow to bout, in the Spring of 1856 I put in A crop of wheat; and went on A Mission to the Devel gate for A load of ancarts goods; I turn out to be A general traider; in 1857 I put in A crop, my Son George was Born in this year, in the fall I went out to Echo Canyon; to meet Johnson Army, I was with general Wells untill he came in to the vallay; I then Started on A Mission; to

Salmon Rivere; I was Sent back from Marsh valley; in charge of A lot of Wagons; when I got home, I put in my Crop, and then the order Came for every body to move South, So I moved South in Companny with Christopher Layton and geo. Allen in 1858; we travel west of Utah Lake, we found out that the indean was very hosstile that way; so we turn back, then the word came for every body to return to there homes; So I drove home. I done Conciderable traiding with the gentiles in the fall in the Spring of 1859 I put in A crop; in July 7th my Son Franklin was Born; in the Spring of 1860. I moved to Chache

Valley Franklin; we Camp in what is know as the South feild; and then bro Maughn Came up and held A meeting and appointed Bro Smart my Self and Bro. Sanderson as A Committee to give out the land and take Charge of the place until there was A Bishop appointed So we went to work and Surveyed the land and draw lots fot it put in A crop work on water ditches most of the Summer in the fall I went to Sell dry goods for Parry & Co Salt Lake City; Present Young Came up appointed Preston Thomas Bishop; in 1861 we put in A Crop and I had A team

Across the plains after the poor; and I started A dry goods Store; done Conciderable traiding; in the year 1862 my Daughter Easter was born; Sent A team across the plains after the poor; put in A Crop and tended Store; I be long to the minite Company, and I was out on every expedision; and we had A grate amount of runing every year, I work on pubblice work A grate deal; in 1863 I put in A crop; I Sent A team across the plains, every year they went and one season I sent 2 Wagons; in Aug 28th my son Albert was Born;

in the year 1864 I put in A crop; and Bought A half of A Chaf piler thresing Machine; I help to guard Franklin from indians depridation A grate deal; in 1865 April 18th my daughter Clarisa was Born; I Farm it all that year, and Bought Ό of A new pitts theshing Machine; I work on water ditches, and meeting house, me and Bro Smart Bilt A Saw mill; in the year 1866 I Farm and Run the Store all the time my daught Caroline was Born Nov 10th; and I Married Charlotte Hayter Smart in December, in the year 1867 I Farm my daughter ann was Born October 15th; I took the theshing Machine and run it down rong Ogden and and done good Business;

in February 15th 1868 I Married Maria Hayter Smart I was Farming and traiding and I went A freighting to Montanner in 1869 March 27th my Son Thomas was born Sept 7th my daughter Lucy was Born I Sold dry goods and done Conciderble Business I paid up 6 shairs in the Coop Store in the year 1870 I Farm and traided all this year I Served as Constuble for about 8 years my dauther luella Born Sept 22 in 1871 I Farm and traided in any thing horses Cattle dry goods or grain in 1872 the Stock holders of the Store put me in A directtor and Superintendent of the Store

July 15th my son Joseph was Born; the Store when I took Charge of it; was in dept $2.300 dollars I run it 1 year it was not oweing Any Body then I was Call on A mission to Arrizona and I went my Jurnal Commences April 12th 1873 in that you will find it more Correct I have rote this down as near Correct as I Could recorlect

            Still wateing at the houserock Spring I rote A letter to Charlotte C. Pratt to day all the men in camp met to gether and appinted A captain and chapline and clark and Sarngent of the guard

19        Drove to Jacob spols 12 m. through sand good water some feed no wood. in the evening we went up to John D Lee. and had A long chat with him. I ask him to tell me About the mountain meadow masacree, and he told me all About it

20        Drove out 5 m. all Sand no water drove to Bager creek 7 m good feed poor water Sandy road no wood A long chat with J.D. Lee to night

30        Bro Nelson went Back and Sett 3 tires and brought the wagon to camp and then we Drove 11 m. to Rockpool good water and grass but heavy road Drove 2 m. and Camp we met 2 Navao indians with 3 young Deer they was glad to See us

1873    Drove 8 m. before brakfast Drove 5 more m to the Summitt 20 m. down the kanyon heavy Sands good water and feed eat Brakfast at 8 oclock eat dinner 9½ oclock heavy walkin in Sand I never was So tired Sinc I Jine the Church left 6 wagons an the road

June 1th 1873 I went Back 7 m. and Brought in wagon with my team heavy roads one of our men found A basion maid by the old Nephief and I drunk water out of it Stop here all day

2          drove South towards little Collorrado 15 m. miss the Mowing coppy trail. Could not find water and had to come back in the night horses Sufferd very much heavy Sands all the way 2 Brothern

            Just Come in to Camp Bro. Morrell give A very Bad Acount of the Country Said they was no water no good land no timber I Sent A letter to Franklin C. Parkinson

4          I went Back after A wagon 12 m. to day belongin to gib conerly and met A part of Horton Height train coming back they give A bad very bad account of the country in the evening they came and cerernaded our Camp and Soung Soung Songs and preach in danish. they See Deer and Bear this moring there was 2 wagons went back they would not Stay here any longer our Captain Height will not move

1873    we Stade here all day and the balance of the wagons came back to day and the string band went out and met them and had quite A jully time there was 3 teames Started home and at night they came back and say they felt like deserters and said if you do not belive it you try it the balance of Captain Height companny move ½ m. nearer water

6          our Companny move ½ m. to Heaght Companny Strang band play all round Camp very hot place I saw Jace hamlin pres of the indains he was traiding for

1873    Still wateing at the mowing Coppy I went 3 m. this morning to feed the team I though that to far so I brought them Back, very warm days now but coule nights, I went up on the hightest mountain and I could See for 50 m. all Around the little Colorado, I see A tree to day 3½ feet throught the butt 183 feet [inserted: “fullenth 366 feet”] long 22 inches throught the little end all petterrefide into rock

1873    we are Sill Camp at the mowing Coppy. there where Some of the Brothen went 12 m. to the indain farm to day. we are feeding our flower to our horses. the wether is very warm now. the band is playing round Camp to night

10        we are Still wateing at the mowing Coppy there was an indain Came to Camp to day very much please to See us, and very Sorry there was no place for us to live in this country. the indain are all praying for rain, the few Spring there is are Strong with Salaratoes at the indain City they pack there water from 1 to 2 m. on there backs. they pack there wood 7 m. I would have paid them A visit but I was told I have to take my horse 5 m. to water from the city

11th

1873    I went up to the indain farm 12 m. to day and I saw how they work and I saw there houses and wemon and how they cook and eat with them these indain is name arabbes there was 2 indain could talk Spanish and I had A long talk with them all About there affairs and Steade with them all night

12        I went back to Camp 12 m. I got Some of there bread and see them make it. these indain are A hard working people. they have Sheep goats and Donkes there was 4 indain Came to Camp with us we reloaded our wagon got Supper and went on gaird all night

13        we are still wateing for Some word from pres Young the indains traided A little to day with the Brothren very hot day

June     Still it hail A few minit. I was very sick to day the theometer was up to 108 in the Shade and in one half an houre it was down to 70

14        we are Still wateing at the mowing Coppy I am A little better to day. there is 4 indain men and 1 woman and 3 Donkeys in camp to day

15        still waiting at the mowing Coppy I went and got Some petterefide wood of A tree Aboute 300 feet long, and I went and Coppy come indains ways of righting we had A meeting in Camp this evening it was A very good meeting I was Call on to Speak I don So and felt well

16        there was A Company of men Call to take the horses 12 miles to the moin coppey to better feed I was one of them I was not well that

1873    day but I got better when I got there I went to the indains houses and heard them Sing and talk

17        this place is name moincoppey we Stead here all there was A was light collard navaho Squaw vitited us to day and we return the vitited in the evening hear her Sing I See Some wheat planted Six days ago 3 inches high

18        we move our camp this morning 1½ miles up the hollow very warm to day exspress started to the Collorrado river to find out whats the matter for we have had no ancer from our other exspress

19        Still camp here very warm I have A paine in my kidneys all the time there was A Stampeed last Night with the horses

23        we move our camp 5 miles towards the indain farm for better feed there was 19 Wagons Started Back to the navaho Springs 9 m. South of the Collorado river to wate

M. 26   we are Still Camp hear. we heard no word from headquarters yet. we treaded for an another Sack of flower for our teame

1873    the Captain told us at prays this evening that he would Start home on monday weather he got any word or not from head quarters

T 28     mail came in this morning and I got four letters 1 from A Parkinson 1 do Sharllotte and Maria Parkinson 1 do L. Packer 1 do W. Parkinson I was very glad to here from you J.D. Lee had to run from the river that was the way we got our mail he told us that there was 600 Soldies after him I was on gaird last night I Set 3 tire for Bro. Laws rote 1 letter to A.C. Parkinson

1873    I am A litter better this morning all hand is very bisey Crossing the wagons I got my wagon A Cross and camp on this side theometer Stod 137 to day in the shade

S. 7      we are Still bisey Crossing our wagons in A boat 14 feet long 3½ wide finish crossing all our horses and then we went down to sister Lee and call for A Squre meal and had it and drove out 8 m. from the Pyreer Creek

M. 8     drove to Soap Creek 8 m. to Jaccupspools 12 m. though heavy Sands and bad water I went up to sister Lees about 11 clock and Call for Super and she promes it. and when we went up to Super She Say She though we had Super Said there was So many had Super ther had eat it all

1873    Bro Stanger wanted us to Brake A horse for him yesterday So we hitch him up Drove out 6 m and had A dry Camp Drove on to houserock 6 m. commenc loading our keys with water as we have A 40 m. Drive with out water I learn to day that there was 56 wagons Cross the big Collorado and 103 men and 5 woman and 1 Child the distance from the big Collorado to where the Brothen went on the little Collorado 2.25 miles

W. 10  I rote A letter to Lucy B Packer and Drove on the Buckskin mountain 15 m. camp and had Supper

So he said he would do it

S. 11    I am now at Bro Robinses all day I got A Talegram Stating that Bro Hawk had got the names Sign to the note So I Sent A talegram to W.C.P. to let Bro Hawk have four hundred dollars ) $400 ( and I would let him have it when he Came down

M. 12   I am Still at Bro. Robins and moved to D.H. Peery at Night

T. 13    I am Still at D.H. Peery Mrs Robins brought me A letter from home and Robert Harris brought me A letter with the note in for to get the money for Jas. Hawk then I went and vitited Robert Watson and had A long talk

S. 25    I rode home with W.C.P. on the U.N.R.R. to high Creek and Came home after dark I found the Family very well Considering Circumstances
